Installation project representing "the vital role of spontaneous forest fires in the cycles of

succession, reproduction, development and distribution of species in the unique Pine Barrens

ecosystem of Sam's Point, Minnewaska State Park, NY."

2006 Pratt Institute Faculty Development Grant

Installation project "...presenting the vast Trans-Caucasus region (which includes Turkey,

Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia,) as a single, unique

ecosystem that transcends human political divisions. Moody, purple-stained maps, paintings,

and facsimiles of pressed plant specimens, some lit through gels painted to cast shadow

patterns derived from those on the irises' petals, alluded to rare and endangered species

of native irises and the geographical locations of wild populations. Today still considered

symbols of mourning, the eerie blooms of these ancient plants, possible source of the classical

myth of Persephone, were once believed to arise from the underworld."
